Why & When Stalingrad changed its name -

In 1961, following the policy of deconstructing the cult of personality around Stalin, Stalingrad was renamed Volgograd.      

In 2013, in honor of the 70th anniversary celebrations, the city changed back to its old name.   

Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, is a city in southwest Russia, on the western bank of the Volga River.

It was the site of WWII’s Battle of Stalingrad, commemorated by a huge statue, The Motherland Calls, part of the hilltop Mamayev Kurgan memorial complex.
