After breakfast depart on a privately-guided city tour of St. Petersburg that introduces you to the beauty and wonder of this amazing city: the fashionable Nevsky Prospect where many boutiques and department stores await the energetic shopper, the Admiralty, the former Stock Exchange, the majestic Academy of Arts, Palace Square with Winter Palace and the Hermitage, Stroganof and Menshikov Palaces, and the Neva river embankment. Your city tour concludes with a visit inside the formidable St. Isaac's Cathedral (or: Peter-and-Paul Fortress) that still ranks as one of the world's top architectural splendors of the 19th century. Just one fact about St. Isaac's: the cathedral is six (!) times more costly than the entire Winter Palace, Czar's residence for centuries! Today you will also visit the incomparable Hermitage Museum. It houses over 2.7 million displayed exhibits and an equal number in its reserve rooms. It is said that to see everything would take several years! It truly is vast and spectacular! After breakfast depart with your guide 30 km outside of St. Petersburg to Petrodvorets, the spectacular Summer Palace of Peter the Great, on the Gulf of Finland. The delightfully designed park amazes everyone with its golden statues of Greco-Roman gods and over 150 cascading water fountains. The palace itself will give you an idea why Russia was the greatest Empire in all of Europe - whatever European aristocracy had, Russia had bigger, and better! In the afternoon return to St. Petersburg where you have time to shop or perhaps visit the Russian Museum filled with masterpieces by great Russian artists |
